SEBASTIAN COUNTY (KFSM) – A rape suspect was found dead Thursday night in his Sebastian County Detention Center cell, according to the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office.
The inmate was found unresponsive around 7 p.m., after which jail staff attempted lifesaving procedures. Emergency crews transported the man to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A statement from the Sheriff’s Office states authorities are withholding the name of the inmate until family members are notified. The man had been held in jail since Nov. 21, when he was booked in on suspicion of rape, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The inmate was found hanging and was in the cell by himself, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Arkansas State Police are heading up an investigation into the death. The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an internal investigation.
