FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)- Walmart is working to get one step closer to building a Neighborhood Market in South Fayetteville. Tuesday (Dec. 16) the city council plans to discuss and most likely vote on whether to rezone part of the property.

The location Walmart wants to build is on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard between South School and Hill Avenue.

If built, it would be a 40,000 square foot building, with a deli and pharmacy and create 95 jobs.

Adella Gray, city council member, said she expects a vote to happen tonight on the rezoning issue. A section of the property is industrial and Walmart wants it changed to commercial.

In its design, the company added some amenities after some people who live near the property said they wanted it more eco-friendly.

"They have pulled the sidewalks back from the street, they have a good green space between the sidewalk and the street and they have trees," Gray said.

The design also includes a bicycle repair area and the lot is located right next to the trail.
"Those are the big issues right there that they want the design of the store to be different, not that they don't want the store to be there," Gray said. "Although a lot of folks would like for it to be a Harps or an IGA rather than a Walmart but most folks are OK with it being a Walmart, they just want a different design building."
If the city council approves rezoning, the next step will be for Walmart to work on a large scale development plan with the city's Planning Commission.
