ROGERS (KFSM) - Over a thousand Northwest Arkansas children will have present under the tree this year thanks to the second annual Care For The Holidays program.

Charolette Kinard took advantage of the help. Kinard said she found out Friday (Dec. 19) that she wouldn't be getting a paycheck before Christmas. For medical reasons, she had to go on short-term disability. With a four-year-old and 12-year-old at home, she said she didn't know what to do about Christmas.

"We would have made it, we would have made it more about what it's really about, but this will give them something to open and something to be happy about," Kinard said.

Kinard went to Care For The Holidays Saturday, where she was able to pick out Christmas presents for her sons.

"It means my kids don't have to worry about Christmas, and I don't have to worry about needing Christmas," Kinard said.

Director Kimberly Porter said the program has helped over 1200 kids in Northwest Arkansas in the last week. On Saturday, they also provided a free hot meal, and sent families home with a box of food.

Kinard said the food sent home will help feed her family through the holidays.

"I live from paycheck to paycheck, and so that's going to help get us through with him being home the two weeks, until I can go back to work," Kinard said.

Porter said in the past several days, the Care Community Center has given out over 10,000 pounds of food. She said they help local families living in 200% poverty. She said that equates to a family of four living on $52,000 a year.

"It's our community and if we're doing the right things, we're taking care of our neighbors, and if our neighbors are doing well then we as a community will prosper, and that's the message we send every day, just not on Christmas," Porter said.

She said there will be a similar event at Doubletree Apartments in Rogers Sunday (Dec. 21) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Porter said there wil be a free hot meal, toys for the kids and a food box to take home.
