EASTERN OKLAHOMA (KFSM) – The Muldrow, Okla., woman critically injured after colliding with a semi truck died from her injuries Friday, a week after the wreck, according to a crash report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Shelby Howard, 20, died Friday morning at Washington Regional Medical Center, where she had been since she was critically injured in the two-vehicle wreck Dec. 12, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Howard was driving her 2006 Chevrolet pickup eastbound on U.S. 64 near Roland, when she attempted to change lanes and veered off of the roadway and across the median. Her truck was then struck by a semi truck traveling in the opposite direction, according to the highway patrol crash report.
Large pieces of debris and wreckage blocked the roadway for much of the morning. A separate vehicle sustained major damage from the debris, the report states.
A Sparks Regional Medical Center employee said he witnessed the wreck and stopped to give CPR to Howard, who had no pulse and was not breathing. She started breathing again and was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.
Howard suffered multiple internal and external injuries in the wreck.
The semi driver, Ernest Vandusseldorp, 77, of Hartman, was also hospitalized with internal injuries, but was in good condition, according to the highway patrol.
The crash report lists the cause of the wreck as “unsafe speeds”.
