VAN BUREN (KFSM) - The Van Buren Police Department is helping local children this holiday season. The annual Shop With A Cop program kicked off Monday morning (Dec.22).

Christmas came early for over 200 kids Monday. They were at the Walmart located on Fayetteville Road to pick out their own Christmas presents.

Through this program, police officers take children in need to local Walmarts. Kids of all ages came with their families to shop with a cop. The kids were given a budget of about $80. They could spend the money on anything from toys to clothing.

The event is funded by donations from local businesses, as well as fundraisers.

Officers said they enjoy trying to make this time of year special for the kids. "Most of the kids love to be around cops," said Detective Jonathan Wear with the Van Buren Police Department. "We have a lot of kids that really enjoy that time, so it's good for the kids and it's good for the officers."

About thirty officers came out to shop with the kids. Officers said this is the 24th year they've done the Shop With A Cop program.
