FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – Two boys stepped up to protect their mother during an attempted Fayetteville robbery on Dec. 18, police say.

Mary Lopez and her two sons, 13-year-old Christian and 10-year-old Kaleb, had arrived at the Walmart at 3919 N. Mall Ave. when they were rushed by a man later identified as Michael Elmore, 24, according to police. He attempted to snatch Lopez’s purse, pushing the oldest son out of the way, police said.

The purse was in the family’s shopping cart, and before Elmore could get away, the two sons came to their mother’s defense, trying to fight off the would-be robber, according to police.

They were both thrown to the ground by Elmore, and they grabbed his legs, preventing him from running away, police said.

A concerned citizen approached and assisted the boys in pinning Elmore down until officers arrived, according to police.

“The men and women of the Fayetteville Police Department salute Christian and Kaleb for their quick action and bravery,” a spokesman for the Fayetteville Police Department said.

His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 23 at 7:45 a.m., jail records state.
