CRAWFORD COUNTY (KFSM) - A $1 million project to replace a constantly - flooded bridge in Crawford County began Monday (Jan.5). Road crews began to replace the bridge on Pevehouse Road.

Workers began to prep the area for construction by getting the areas cleared so they can start building. The bridge floods more than 23 times a year because it stands three feet over a creek, according to the county's emergency management department.

The new steel and concrete bridge will stand about 12 feet over the water way, freeing it from rising water during rainfall. People in the area will have to detour between Mitzi Lane and Sandstone.

The project received about $700,000 in grant money from the Federal Emergency Management, with the city of Van Buren picking up $100,000 and the county covering the remaining $200,000, emergency management director Dennis Gilstrap said.

According to Gilstrap,  people are looking forward to having the project get started. "I"m really excited to get this project started," said Gilstrap. "I think people that live in this area are ready to the get project moving."

According to Gilstrap, people in the area are willing to put up with the inconvenience to get it done.

Drivers will have to go around the bridge while crews work on it. Detour signs have been set up, so you will know where to go.

Officials said work on the project is expected to wrap up this September.
