CRAWFORD COUNTY (KFSM) – A Crawford County family is working to salvage what they can Friday morning (Jan. 9), after their home was destroyed in an early morning fire.
Authorities said the two-alarm fire started at a home on Dry Hill Loop, near Chester, just before 2:30 a.m.
The family of four says they were asleep inside their home when the fire sparked. They woke up to the smell of smoke and called 911. They were able to make it out safely, while firefighters were on their way to the scene.
A neighbor also woke up about the same time to the smoke and called authorities.
The family said they just watched in tears as the flames shot out of the roof of their home.
District Four and Five firefighters arrived a short time later and were able to get the fire under control.
They stayed on scene for several hours, watching for hot spots.
The District Four Battalion Chief said the cause of the fire is still under investigation Friday morning. It appeared that the fire started near the front door of the home, according to crews on scene.
He also said there were no working fire alarms inside the home.
The family told 5NEWS they are planning to stay with relatives for the time being.
