ROGERS (KFSM) - He's the smallest wrestler at Rogers, but despite his size Stephen Waterhouse has been unstoppable. At 106 lbs. the junior wrestles in the lightest weight class.

"I was 24-0 up until Saturday," Waterhouse said. "I won four matches, went up to 28 and then I lost one."

His first loss came Saturday at the Butler Bear Invitational in the finals where he competed against all Missouri schools. Waterhouse leads his team, which is a state favorite.

Surprisingly this is actually only the second year he's ever wrestled.

"He's a hard worker in practice," coach Ken Simmons said. "When he comes to practice, it's not like he's messing around or anything. Him and his partners are usually real serious about what they're doing. The hard work is paying off with the results he's been getting."

There's one reason why Waterhouse says he's been so successful.

"Well, I have five older brothers. so, I have to fight for everything," Waterhouse said.

He competed a short season last year, but came away undefeated in his weight class. This year coaches say the small wrestler has exceeded their expectations.

"Last year we thought he had some ability to do well. It's just one of those things where when you sit back and look at it, you know he's going to be successful. But to have the kind of success where he's been dominating as he has, it's just been a really good surprise for us," Simmons said.

Simmons says he's capable if not winning state, being one of the top three wrestlers at the end of the year.
