FORT SMITH (KFSM) - A fire at a Fort Smith thrift store shut down traffic along Towson Avenue in both directions Friday morning, according to the Fort Smith Fire Department.
Crews responded to the fire at 2410 Towson Ave. at 7:15 a.m. in reference to a fire at the Days Gone By resale shop. Responding crews called for support and laid water hoses along the street to battle the fire, according to the fire department.
Authorities blocked off Towson, near South W Street, in front of the store. By just after 8 a.m., most of the fire was out, and crews continued to put out hot spots, according to a fire marshal.
The building is not necessarily a total loss, although crews said the smoke and fire destroyed nearly everything inside. The fire marshal said the fire likely started in the basement. No one was inside at the time, and no one was injured.
Authorities were notified of the fire when two off-duty Sebastian County Sheriff's deputies noticed the fire while driving by, according to the fire department.
