CEDARVILLE (KFSM) – Cedarville’s police chief will stay in his position, following a meeting to determine if the City Council would overturn the mayor’s appointment of him.

The Cedarville City Council voted Tuesday night to retain Chief Larry Merrill instead of overriding his appointment in December by Mayor Glenanna O’Mara.

A recommendation committee had suggested two candidates to O’Mara based on only viewing their applications. The mayor interviewed the two candidates and hired Merrill on Dec. 16.

City councilmembers had suggested in a separate meeting that O’Mara hire a different candidate, Donny Threet, but that information never reached the mayor, O’Mara said. That led to calls from city councilmembers to explore whether to oust Merrill as the new chief by overturning the mayor’s decision.

The mayor told councilmembers Tuesday night she was never forwarded the recommendation, and a letter with the recommendation had never been sent to her. Following discussion on the topic Tuesday night, the city council decided to keep Merrill on board as chief, the official said.

O’Mara said she is excited for Merrill’s term as chief and believes he is the right person for the job.

Cedarville has gone through four different police chiefs in 14 months, not including the interim police chief who served from August 2014 to December.
