GREENLAND (KFSM) - The city of Greenland is working to build a new trail system, but the plan has had to undergo some changes after it was met with some opposition.

Mayor Bill Groom said the city held an open forum Monday (Jan. 19) about the proposed trail, where residents voiced their concerns. He said the trail would be about two to three miles in length, and would connect the town to the 36 existing miles of the Razorback Greenway.

Groom said the trail would consist of typical bike paths, mixed with sharing sidewalks and roads. He said there have been rumors the city would be taking private property for parts of the project, and said the rumors aren't true. The mayor said, after hearing from citizens, the city has decided to redraw parts of the trail map.

"You have to dream it first, then you have to plan it, then you have to fund it, then you have to build it, then you have to use it. We're at the planning stage," Groom said.

Part of the area that had residents concerned is just north of Wilson Street.  The original plans show the city wanted to build a path on either side of a creek in a residential area.

Patricia and Bill Lindaberry said they were part of the group who opposed the new trail system, because they felt their privacy was being invaded. The Lindaberry's live about 15 yards from the creek.

"We wouldn't have a problem at all with the trail, except it would be impacting us in such a damaging way," Bill Lindaberry said.

They said they were relieved to hear that part of the trail has been taken off the plan. The mayor said he is working to find an alternate route.

According to the mayor, there will be a second public forum about the new trail system in mid-February. Groom said he encourages anyone with questions or concerns to contact City Hall.
