Lunney Steps Down As Bentonville Coach

Longtime coach retiring after winning four state titles at both Bentonville and Southside

BENTONVILLE (KFSM) - If there was a Mount Rushmore of Arkansas high school football coaches, Barry Lunney Sr. would likely have a place on it.

Lunney won eight state championships, including this past season, but the head coach of the Tigers resigned Monday as he announced his retirement.

Lunney went 248-90-1 during his 28 year coaching career, including a 97-25 run with the Tigers. Bentonville won four of it's five state championships under Lunney (2008, 2010, 2013, 2014). Lunney led Southside to state titles in 1991, 1992, 1997 and 2002.

"Coach Lunney’s leadership established the Bentonville Tiger Football Program as one of the elite programs in Arkansas, and garnered attention as one of the premier high school programs in the country," Bentonville athletic director Scott Passmore said in a press release. "Coach Lunney is recognized as one of the most successful high school football coaches in Arkansas. He is a man of great character, high standards, compassion, and dedication to preparing the young men on his teams not only for success on Friday nights, but also for success in life. Coach Lunney’s retirement is a loss for Bentonville Public School District, his coaches and players, but a well-deserved win for him as he closes out an outstanding career."

Bentonville established itself as one of the premiere football powers in the state as they reached the title game each of the past five seasons, winning three 7A championships during that span.
