FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Fort Smith is being printed on some commemorative coins as they come hot off the press at the United States Mint. The coins are being created in honor of the U.S. Marshals Museum going up along the Arkansas River.
U.S. Marshals from across Arkansas came together Thursday (Jan.29) in Fort Smith to see the three new coins.
The three coins were created to highlight the legacy of the nation's oldest federal law enforcement agency and its 225 years of service to the country.
One of them is gold, another silver, and one is clad.
The gold costs the most coming in at more than $400. It's in honor of the fallen U.S. Marshals. It features a current marshal's badge and the words 225 years of sacrifice. The reverse depicts an eagle with a shield on its chest and is inscribed with U.S. Marshal.
The silver coin costs nearly $50. It honors the agency's frontier history in Fort Smith. The silver coin shows on one side, a marshal on horse back. On the other side, a U.S. Marshal holding a wanted poster.
The clad coin will only set you back $15. It captures the diverse missions of the agency throughout the nation's history. It's meant to symbolize the agency's involvement during the nation's changing times.
"People like to collect these coins because it's something unique," said Director of Development, Alice Alt. "This is hertige in history for our community and for our nation."
