FORT SMITH (KFSM) – U.S. Marshals busted a level-four sex offender in Fort Smith on Friday (Jan. 30), authorities say.
Terry Smith, 55, was wanted by police in Camden and Arkansas State Police on suspicion of failure to comply as a registered sex offender, according to a news release. He was booked into the Sebastian County Detention Center on Friday, jail records state.
In October 2014, Camden police discovered Smith had disappeared from his registered address, and a warrant was immediately issued for his arrest, the release states.
U.S. Marshals were contacted to help track Smith down.
The Fort Smith Police Department also listed Smith as a suspect in an aggravated assault with a firearm case that involved terroristic threatening, according to the release.
Authorities said additional charges may be filed by the Fort Smith Police Department now that Smith has been arrested.
Smith was taken into custody after U.S. Marshals found him trying to pick up a check from a former employer, the release states.
Senior Inspector Cory Thomas, with the U. S. Marshals Service said, “We were glad to assist in locating and arresting Smith. Level-four sex offenders need to be monitored and should be checked by authorities regularly to ensure compliance with all sex offender guidelines and laws. Fort Smith, like much of Arkansas, is family friendly and a great place to live. We cannot have a level-four sex offender living in our community without being registered.”
