FORT SMITH (KFSM) – Sales of commemorative coins to raise money for the planned U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith topped $1 million after the first day, museum officials said Friday.

The one-day haul brings the money raised for a planned Marshals Museum to $20 million. The museum is expected to cost a total of $50 million.

The commemorative coins are created through the United States Mint and are $412 for the gold coin, $47 for the silver coin and $15 for the clad half-dollar.

A statement from the Marshals Museum states the Mint is authorized to issue a maximum of 100,000 gold coins, 500,000 silver dollar coins and 750,000 clad half-dollars.

The $1 silver coin included in the bunch honors the U.S. Marshals’ frontier history, featuring a marshal on horseback on the front and “Wanted In Fort Smith” on the back. Those coins are on backorder, and officials are working quickly to fill those orders.

The coins can be bought at USMarshalsMuseum.com/coin, but the museum is also holding an event to sell the coins Feb. 7 at the Blue Lion Building in Fort Smith at 6 p.m. That event will feature entertainment and refreshments.

The three coins were created to highlight the legacy of the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency and its 225 years of service to the country.

There are several places you go and purchase the coins including the U.S. Marshal’s Museum website or the United States Mint website.
