SALLISAW (KFSM) — One man is dead after a house fire north of Sallisaw, just west of Hwy 17 and E 1000 Rd., according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart.

At 7:16 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 31) a 911 call was made.

When the Marble City Fire Dept. arrived, the house was fully engulfed and fire officials located a deceased body when the fire was extinguished, Lockhart said.

According to Lockhart, it was discovered during interviews with witnesses that a female was inside the residence during the fire and had escaped at about the same time a male arrived in a vehicle. The male saw the house was on fire and ran around to a side door to get inside, thinking his wife was still inside, but she had escaped through a different door.

After the man entered, the roof fell in.

The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma State Fire Marshals Office and the State Medical Examiner’s Office responded, according to Lockhart.

All agencies are working the case as a crime scene until an autopsy is completed, which will show the cause of death. At this time there are no indications of any foul play, according to Lockhart.

The body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
