CLARKSVILLE (KFSM) - A fire in downtown Clarksville destroyed two buildings and damaged two others on Monday (Feb. 2). Crews worked throughout the morning to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings along the downtown strip.

The fire started in the attic of a clothing shop on Main Street around 5:40 a.m. Monday, according to Clarksville Fire Chief Clark Gray.  By 9 a.m., the fire had destroyed the store and a vacant building next door.

"It was about 20 degrees and all of our trucks were covered with ice, we were covered with ice and the street was covered with ice," Gray said. "We couldn't walk. It made it quite difficult."

Arkansas Cycle Works, a motorcycle shop next door, sustained damage from the fire, but crews dousing it with water saved the building, according to Gray.

"It has been a horrible Monday," Arkansas Cycle Works manager Josh Harrison said.  "Just wondering if we are going to have a shop left when it's all said and done."

Firefighters also worked to make sure a fourth building, Jackson's Heating & Air Conditioning, did not catch fire.

"They both got some smoke and water damage, but it's not real bad," Gray said. "Cycle Works got more water damage. The other business hardly got any water damage."

Traffic was diverted downtown as crews battled the flames. Cherry Street and Main Street were closed from 5:40 a.m. until about 12:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire chief said that he does not expect anything suspicious at this time.

No injuries have been reported.
