FORT SMITH (KFSM) – Fort Smith Police need help locating a suspect after discovering a man with a gunshot wound to his back, during a traffic stop Friday night (Feb. 6).

Jesus Martinez-Herrera is likely responsible for shooting Yovani Villa, according to authorities. They say Villa was driving a pickup truck while Herrera was a passenger.

Villa told police he was shot while riding near Midland Ave., according to Sgt. Don Cobb. Officers pulled the black Dodge pickup truck over for speeding near the intersection of N. 19th and Grand Ave at 8:40 p.m.

Cobb said there were three people inside. He tells 5NEWS Villa’s injuries are not life threatening and a small caliber gun likely made the wound. He was taken on an ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith. No one else was injured.

Herrera had gotten out prior to the traffic stop, according to an email from Sgt. John Classen. Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident, including finding the suspect’s location.
