FORT SMITH (KFSM)- People from all over the world are on their way to the River Valley.

That’s because the first ever Fort Smith marathon is taking place.

Several roads will be down to one lane as more than 1,000 runners are expected to hit the streets.

Fort Smith Director of Development Services Wally Bailey said people from 23 states and four foreign countries are registered for the race.

Bailey said the event is a part of the Future of Fort Smith plan that was adopted by city officials in December.

Proceeds from the marathon will benefit the Fort Smith Park Partners and their work to expand the Fort Smith trail system.

“The Fort Smith marathon is pretty much in line with one of the goals and policies that we had within our newly adopted comprehensive plan this past December,” Bailey said. “One of the polices within it is to support festivals and special events that highlight what makes Fort Smith unique.”

The race kicks off Sunday (Feb. 8) at nine a.m. and is expected to wrap up at four p.m.
