Delanei Hurt Setting Records At JC Westside

Delanei Hurt records a quadruple double while setting records for JC Westside

When you think of all-time great centers names like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain come to mind. Johnson County Westside girls basketball has their own record setting center in junior Delanei Hurt.

"I had to ask her if she was being serious," Hurt said. "I didn't know if she was playing with me. When she said it was true, I had to go wake my dad up and tell him because I was pretty excited."

Hurt had a night few others have been able to accomplish in the Lady Rebels game against Union Christian Academy. The center did it all while filling in for a spot not usually hers.

"When Hailey Weathers got hurt, our point guard, Delanei is our center and she had to step up and play the point guard," West Side coach Steve Golden said. "The first night she played point guard she had a quadruple double."

The junior came away with 14 points,10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 blocks along with 5 steals. Earlier this the week, she had another double double against Magazine.

"The other night at point guard she had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Last year I touted her as one of the best sophomores in the state, and I stand behind that this year as a junior," Golden said.

But this team, who is 13-1 in conference, isn't successful just because of her performance.

"It's been all about teamwork. We have a really unselfish team. They work together. Someone else steps up every night. You know it's not about the individual, it's all about the group and I'm real proud of that," Golden said.

These girls  say that's easy for them to do.

"We've been playing together since we were really little, so we know each others game. We know where we want the ball at. We just now what to do with each other. So, it just works," Hurt said.

This group is working for their chance at a state title.
