FORT SMITH (KFSM)-Christina Sigler works on Kelley Hwy. and had to drive back to Hacket once her shift ended.

You never know if you're gonna hit any slick spots, especially coming up 45 when but as soon as you hit the interstate it's pretty clear except for the bridges it's real slick," she said.

Crews worked all day to keep the roads clear, so drivers like Sigler could make it to their destinations safely. Fort Smith Street Director Greg Riley said getting two new plows several months ago have made a difference cleaning the road more efficiently.

"We came in early in the morning as it was starting to get icy and put trucks on the road putting sand, salt and beet juice and started plowing when it started coming down heavy about 5 this morning," Riley said.

The department has a total of four plows, and will be getting two more within the next month. Monday (Feb. 16 ) was the was the first time the equipment was put to use.

"Were gonna try to pick up everything we can and get get everything covered get the intersections covered and try to keep it from refreezing," Riley said.

He said four trucks and nine employees will be manning the streets overnight, and working into the morning hours of Tuesday (Feb. 17) as necessary.
