FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Slick roads were reported in the River Valley on Monday (Feb.16). A lot of sleet and freezing rain fell. The winter weather from this morning caused several vehicles to slide off the roads.

Drivers said the main streets were fine but it was the side streets that were an issue earlier this morning.

People woke up to scraping ice and snow off their windshields, as the first winter storm of the season hit the area. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow all hit areas of Crawford and Sebastian Counties causing the roads to be slippery across Fort Smith.

It caused several vehicles to slide off the road including a single car accident on South 28th Street around 8:30 this morning. Police said the driver lost control of his car due to ice and hit a tree.

Drivers said the main roads such as Grand Avenue and Rogers weren't bad, it was the side streets.

Road crews said they will be out treating the roads throughout the day.

Authorities across the area still ask you to take it slow as you head out the door.
