FORT SMITH (KFSM)- The winter weather that moved in Monday (Feb. 23) morning forced several school districts in the River Valley to call early dismissals, including the Fort Smith School District.

Darby Junior High was one of the schools that let students out at 2:15 p.m.

“Yay! Very excited,” said Jayte Alston when asked how he felt about the early dismissal.

Alston’s dad said he was notified about the schedule change by phone.

“You never know about this weather these streets could be slick,” Jeff Alston said. “I think it`s going to get bad and I`m from California I don`t drive on ice.”

While waiting in carpool lines can be a headache, Alston and his dad said it's better to be safe than sorry.

There are almost 15,000 students in the Fort Smith School District.
