FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - A project to add more sidewalks and build a multi-use bike and walking path on Old Wire Road in Fayetteville is set to begin later this year, according to city engineer Chris Brown.

Brown said the first phase of the project will be overhauling the Old Wire Road and Mission Boulevard intersection to add a traffic signal. Crews will begin linking up existing sidewalks from Stanton  Avenue to Crossover Road later this year, according to Brown.

He said from Ash Street to Stanton, a 12-foot bike path will be put in sometime in 2016. Brown said the goal is to have a complete sidewalk/path from Crossover to Mission by the end of 2016.

Nicole Freeman lives off of Old Wire Road. Freeman is mother of three boys, and said she's concerned about her family's safety with the lack of sidewalks.

"There's a section right over there that's just not grassy, it's kind of ditchy, so that would be so much better," Freeman said. "I know a lot of people run around here, and it would be just awesome being able to go from our house to our park without having to worry about traffic."

Vietnam veteran Ellis Avery walks 5-7 miles every day on and around Old Wire Road. He said having a good sidewalk system will make a big difference in the area.

"It's worthwhile, so I don't even mind a tax increase for that," Avery said.

Brown said the $4.5 million project is being funded by a temporary sales tax.
