The shallow arctic air continues to reign across the area with very little warm in the works on Friday. Morning low temperatures will be in the single digits and the teens.

We may very well break records Friday morning in Fayetteville; the record is 10º set in 2002. In Fort Smith the record is 15º set in 1934.

Late in the afternoon, a disturbance in the middle of the atmosphere will weaken as it advances east in Arkansas. We may see some snowflakes as early as Noon but more than likely it’ll be in the late afternoon and early evening. The River Valley & Ouachitas have a better chance of seeing some snow than Northwest Arkansas. Accumulations (if any) will be held to less than 1″. The atmosphere is very dry and much of the snow should evaporate before reaching the ground.

The NAM4k Model also shows the possibility for light snow at 4pm Friday.

The next chance for wintry weather will be over the weekend. There is a small possibility of freezing rain during the day on Saturday but the better chances will be Saturday night into Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon, it’s expected to change to all rain.

Travel may be slick and slow after dark on Saturday and then through mid morning on Sunday before the changeover.

This image shows just after midnight on Sunday morning, notice the best chances for a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, or snow will be in Northwest Arkansas. As temperatures fall towards daybreak Sunday morning, it’s possible some light freezing rain will spread south into the River Valley before again climbing above freezing.
