FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)- This week, people at the University of Arkansas are coming together to commemorate the 3-year anniversary of the death of Trayvon Martin.

Justice Week 2015 is in conjunction with Black History month. The group is a community-led initiative that aims to focus on raising awareness to combat the numerous social justice issues impacting minorities in the Northwest Arkansas community.

This event is an opportunity to bridge gaps between various organizations and bring together diverse individuals and leaders, as well as the greater Northwest Arkansas community, to shed light on their passions and educate others on today’s pressing issues.

Today (Thurs. Feb. 26th) a Hoodie March will begin at the University of Arkansas Northwest Quad parking lot at 6:00 p.m.

Attendees are asked to wear hoodies in honor of Trayvon Martin.

A former program will be held after the march in the U of A Union in rooms 512-514 at 7:00 p.m.

Other Justice Week 2015 Events include:

  • Friday, February 27th — Poetic Justice Open Mic Nite will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m. at Common Grounds Coffee House at 412 W. Dickson Street. Be sure to bring your poem, song or music.
  • Saturday, February 28th — Justice and Peace Walk will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Walker Park in Fayetteville. Walk for human and women’s rights, prison reform, gun violence and police brutality. Wear red or black and be sure to wear your hoodies for justice.
  • Saturday, February 28th — Because of Them, We Can Fashion Show: A Snapshot of Black History. This event will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Fayetteville Boys and Girls Club. Children ages 3-15 will strut down the runway dressed as notable figures of black history. Refreshments, snacks and entertainment will be provided.
