(KFSM) – Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is continuing a CODE RED ALERT for type O negative blood. Severe winter weather has caused almost all CBCO drives scheduled for Thursday to be cancelled, with additional cancellations likely for the remainder of the week.

The drive cancellations have resulted in nearly 500 potential donations that have been lost. Blood reserves for all negative blood types are low. Supplies of type O negative, considered the universal type because it may be transfused to anybody, are at less than ten percent of normal levels.

All eligible blood donors, especially type O negative donors, are strongly urged to donate today at a CBCO Donor Center. Please give:

– Bentonville Donor Center, 1400 SE Walton Blvd. – Open today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
– Springdale Donor Center, 3503 S. Thompson St. – Open today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
