UAFS Reaches Heartland Title Game

Lady Lions have chance to secure first ever trip to NCAA tournament

FORT SMITH (KFSM) - If defense leads to offense then the UA-Fort Smith Lady Lions had plenty of offense Friday night in the Heartland Conference tournament at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS forced 19 first half turnovers and built a 16-point halftime lead and then coasted to an 81-56 win over St. Edwards. The top seeded Lady Lions will face No. 3 seed Texas-Permian Basin at 2 p.m. on Saturday (March 7). The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II tournament.

It is the Lady Lions' second trip to the conference title game since joining the league as the lost to No. 1 seeded Newman in 2012, which was their first eligible season as a division II school.

Angi Ramey led UAFS with 18 points while Ashley Bean added 14 points off the bench and Jasmine Brainard finished with 11.

UAFS swept the regular season series with the Lady Falcons as they won 96-85 in Odessa, Texas on Jan. 3 while posting an 85-54 rout at the Stubblefield Center on Jan. 29.
