FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - A local organization in Fayetteville is working to reduce food waste in the area.

Feed Communities is a non-profit organization that promotes hunger relief. The organization also aims to increase healthy food access by cultivating sustainable food networks.

"Every grocery store around has stuff that they either compost or give away and so we are just trying to be the middle man here and get produce out of the garbage cans and into people's bellies," said Katie Rievert, Feed Communities.

Volunteers with the organization collect fresh produce weekly from the Harps located on Crossover Road in Fayetteville. They then distribute the food to community meal kitchens and local food pantries.

"It's perfectly good produce," Rievert said. "It just can't be sold on shelves, because of either the date or the regulations that are at the grocery store."

The Salvation Army receives food drop-offs from Feed Communities about twice a week. Major N.J. Pope said the donations help with food costs.

"We have about 42 people who spend the night here most nights and eat here," he said. "The cost  for feeding is just as expensive as it is for anybody else going to buy groceries, so when they bring in donations of this type it makes a big difference."

An estimated 1.3 billion tons of all edible food produced worldwide is wasted or lost each year.  That's a third of the food produced annually.
