FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - A dark and cold morning Sunday (April 5) didn't stop over 250 people from bundling up for the Mount Sequoyah Sunrise Service.

This year marked the 92nd year the service has been going on. Fayetteville native Olivia House went for the first time.

"Even though it's early, that's part of the struggle, and you get a message out of it either way and it's so beautiful...I wish the sun rose right there, that would be ideal, but it's really nice still and it's like community too," House said.

She said her favorite part was the music, and watching the day begin.

"It's so cool to be here when it's dark and then it gets light as you're sitting in the service," House said.

For the first time ever, Mount Sequoyah offered not only a traditional English service, but a service in Spanish as well. Director Lamar Pettus said he was pleased with the turnout, and said around 30 people attended.

"One of the comments in the survey is 'you never reach out to the hispanic community,' and I began thinking, you know what, that's true," Pettus said.

He said they've been having the sunrise service for nearly a century, and said it's become a tradition for the community.

"People have been coming year after year, I had some people this morning talk about how many times they had been here, and so it's just a wonderful thing, they come rain. shine or snow," Pettus said.
