VIAN, Okla. (KFSM)- An Oklahoma man was arrested Monday (April 6) for attempting to kill an elderly man by putting a rope around his neck, according to the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office.

Tony Douglas White, of Bristow, Oklahoma, is now facing a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill, according to Sheriff Ron Lockhart.

At about 11 a.m. dispatchers received a call about a man choking an elderly driver inside a pickup truck parked on an on-ramp on the eastbound side of Interstate 40 in Vian, Oklahoma, according to the sheriff.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper pulled up to the vehicle and found White standing on top of the man’s truck yelling “I didn’t kill him,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office. After taking White into custody, the trooper found an elderly man in the driver’s seat with a rope around his neck, the release states.

The trooper removed the rope and the victim was transported to Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

The elderly man picked up White at the Flamingo Motel in Fort Smith because he needed a ride and said White started demanding cigarettes and made threats that he would kill the victim, the release states.

According to the sheriff’s office, White has a lengthy criminal history.
