BENTONVILLE (KFSM) – A Louisiana rapist was caught trying to break into a Bentonville home while carrying a bag of condoms on Monday night (April 6), police say.

Hugh B. Boughan, 46, was booked into the Benton County Jail on April 7 at 1:20 a.m. and faces charges of attempted residential burglary and public intoxication, according to jail records.

On April 6 at 11:18 p.m., police were called to the 600 block of Jefferson Street due to a man wearing all black clothing attempting to open the back door of a residence, according to an arrest report.

Police arrived and found Boughan on the back porch of the residence (which is surrounded by a six foot privacy fence) trying to open a door, authorities said.

The suspect was wearing all black clothing (including a pair of black gloves), and officers smelled a strong odor of intoxicants coming from Boughan, the report states. His speech was also slurred, authorities said.

According to police, Boughan was carrying a large kitchen knife in his back pocket and a small black vinyl pouch that contained numerous items, including multiple condoms.

Boughan told police he was looking for “the Andersons” because they were having a party, the report states. He also said he came to Bentonville to visit his mother, but he was looking for a residence belonging to “the Andersons.”

He said he was wearing gloves because he fixes cars for a living, according to police.

While he was taken to be interviewed, officers found several of the window screens on the home had been cut, the report states.

Police said while he was being booked into jail, Boughan told authorities he had condoms in his pouch so that he could “have safe sex.”

A check of Boughan’s criminal history revealed he had been convicted of the following crimes:

  • Aggravated robbery
  • Rape
  • Theft of property
  • Multiple counts of assault with intent to commit rape
  • Parole violation
  • Escape
  • Burglary
  • Theft
  • and more

Authorities said they confirmed that Boughan is a registered sex offender and was recently released from prison after serving a 20-year sentence.

The suspect is being held on a $100,000 bond and has a court date scheduled for May 18, jail records state.
