WASHINGTON COUNTY (KFSM) – Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge has said she will not investigate Washington County bridges.

Rutledge said she doesn’t have the authority to investigate.

In a letter sent on Thursday (April 16), Rutledge told Justice of the Peace Eva Madison that she does agree there are “critical public safety issues” that must be addressed immediately, but she is “charged with no oversight regarding a county judge’s fulfillment of his or her obligations in this regard.”

She explained that a county judge operates the system of county roads and bridges pursuant to Amendment 55 of the Arkansas Constitution, and “a county judge’s administrative authority is subject to the control over appropriations invested in the quorum court and the quorum court’s general authority to adopt an official road plan.”

Rutledge said she has no role in the bridge issue.

“The county attorney. . . and ultimately the courts, are better suited than this office to answer questions raised about administrative actions affecting the maintenance and construction of county bridges,” Rutledge wrote.
