ROLAND,OK (KFSM) - Statistics show 170 people died from drinking and driving in Oklahoma last year. Those deaths represent 25 percent of all total traffic deaths in the Sooner state.

Roland schools now worked to change those statistics. When students arrived at school on Thursday (Apr.16) morning, they saw a crumpled car on the lawn. Administrators said it's to help students realize just how dangerous drinking and driving can be. Administrators said they do campaigns and demonstrations like this every couple of years to show students the tough reality of what happens when you drink and drive.

They try to plan them out for the spring semester, that way the scenario can serve as a reminder during both prom and graduation season.

The demonstration will involve several area agencies including, Roland Police, Fire and Rescue, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol. First responders showed students what they do when they arrive on scene of a drunk driving accident. They use tools , like the jaws of life, to show how they cut people out of a smashed vehicle.

Students at Roland High School said this is a good example so it keeps them from making bad decisions in the future. "It gives the student body a real visual experience on what's happening and why we shouldn't do it," said Tamiyah Harper who is a student at Roland High School. "This shows the consequences of what will happen if they do something like that."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said two in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash at some point in their lifetime. 28 people across the nation die every day in drunk driving accidents.
