FORT SMITH (KFSM)- The rain in the River Valley Saturday (April 18) didn’t stop March for Babies from happening at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.

The annual 5K walk benefits the March of Dimes. Around 150 people registered, organizers said. 5NEWS Sports Anchor Bobby Swofford emceed the event.

Even though the weather moved registration indoors, the walk still took place outside the campus.

“We came here today because we’ve both lost children in child birth, and so March of Dimes is something that’s very near and dear to our hearts because of that fact,” Nicole Swanson and Melinda Hawkins said.

“Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality and we’re able to carry out our mission though fundraisers like March for Babies what we’re here for today,” Dir. Melissa Wood, March of Dimes-Northwest Arkansas said.

Wood said she expects the event to raise around $20,000. Those proceeds will go to benefit programs in Arkansas that help moms have healthy pregnancies.
