Spiro Native Getting Shot For Stephen F. Austin

Hunter Wilson grinding out freshman season for Lumberjacks

Hunter Wilson grew up playing baseball on the Oklahoma side of the river valley but always saw himself playing at Baum Stadium and for Arkansas one day.

Wilson didn't get the chance to be a Razorback but he did get to step onto the surface at Baum Stadium last week, as a member of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

"I grew up wanting to play here, wanting to be a Hog," Wilson said. "Things didn't fall my way but coming here to put my cleats on this dirt, I love it."

It took Wilson a few games to crack the Lumberjacks starting lineup but once he got his shot, he took advantage. The Spiro native has started in 30 of the team's 35 games this season, including every Southland Conference contest.

"I kept getting pinch hit for and stuff like that," Wilson said. "I'd come in and get a knock and just worked my way into the lineup and once I got my feet ready, I took off like a rocket."

Wilson has driven in 12 runs up to this point in the season but it's his defense that continues to impress.

"Just doing my thing man," Wilson said. "Just trying to do everything together and work hard. Word hard day in and day out because it`s a grind. Right now we're at the turning point. We kind of got beat up last weekend against (Houston Baptist) but we're going to be alright. We're really young and once everything starts to progress, we get a little bit older, we're going to be just fine."

Wilson's freshman season is quickly coming to an end as Stephen F. Austin have just 11 games left in the regular season, including the finale in his home state of Oklahoma as the Lumberjacks visit the Sooners in Norman.
