Schlinker Takes Over Lavaca Football Program

School’s defensive coordinator takes over after Headley steps down

LAVACA (KFSM) – Mark Headley held the reigns of the Lavaca football program over the past 13 years but he’s handed over control of the Golden Arrows to his defensive coordinator.

Brian Schlinker has spent the five seasons on the Arrows’ sideline, the past two as the defensive coordinator and head junior high coach, but now he’s the head coach. Headley decided to step down as the Lavaca coach to focus on other coaching duties for the school but the move wasn’t a shock to Schlinker.

“He mentioned it to me a couple months ago and I talked to him about my desire to be a head coach,” Schlinker said. “Over the last couple weeks is when things came about and it was made official Monday (April 27).”

Lavaca is coming off a 6-5 season in 2014 and Headly accumulated an 84-60 mark with the Arrows.

“It was one of those situations where he was ready to get out and I was ready to get in,” Schlinker said. “There is just a lot of excitement, a lot of hard work. I’ve been in charge of the offseason program and the kids have really bought in to what it takes to be successful.”

The Arrows are expected to start spring football on May 12.

“We always tell the kids it’s a tough week because we’re playing Booneville or Charleston or Lamar,” Schlinker said. “I want the people in our league to say ‘it’s a tough week because we have Lavaca.’ That’s the type of physical play we want to have.”
