Tennessee Takes Series Opener From Arkansas

Three run seventh inning pushes Vols past Hogs

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - Arkansas had a chance to keep their hot streak going and pad their resume for a NCAA regional host bid but Tennessee had other ideas.

The Volunteers scored three runs in the top of the seventh and then held the Arkansas offense quiet over the final three innings as they pulled out a 5-4 win at Baum Stadium.

Tennessee (20-24, 8-17 SEC) opened the seventh inning with three straight hits, the third being a RBI double off the centerfield wall by Christin Stewart that cut the Arkansas lead to 4-3. A.J. Simcox later tied the game with a RBI single then the Vols took their first lead of the game as a wild pitch from Zach Jackson allowed a run to score from third.

The loss overshadowed a big day from Tyler Spoon. The Arkansas right fielder graduated earlier in the day on Friday then drove in three runs, including a two-run home run in the sixth that gave the Razorbacks a 4-2 lead.

Andrew Benintendi hit his NCAA leading 16th home run of the season in the third as it gave the Hogs a 2-1 lead.

Trey Killian received a no decision after throw six innings while allowing two runs on six hits but was lifted after 93 pitches.

Arkansas will try to even the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
