FORT SMITH (KFSM) – Fort Smith police arrested an armed bank robbery suspect on Monday (May 11), authorities say.

Michael Smith, 39, of Fort Smith was taken into custody after officers located him in a vacant house on N. 12th St., according to a news release.

On May 11 at 10:48 a.m., police were called to the First National Bank at 2000 Midland Blvd. for a robbery. The suspect was reported to be a black man who left the bank heading northwest from the parking lot, the release states.

Police said they arrested Smith not long after, and they also recovered the money stolen from the bank.

Smith was booked into the Sebastian County Detention Center and faces a charge of aggravated robbery, according to jail records.

Police said they do not believe this robbery to be related to the one on May 1.
