FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Voters in Fort Smith are heading to the polls Tuesday (May 12) to decide whether they want to renew an existing street tax and put part of it toward creating a trail system in the city.

The street tax has been in place for 30 years and the city is asking voters to renew it for another ten.

The ballot will also ask voters whether they want to put 5% of that existing street tax to fund about 35 miles of trail through the city. City leaders said a trail system would cost about $10 million.

$3 million would come from the Parks and Recreation Department budget with the other $7 million coming from the tax revenue.

The rest of the money generated by the tax will go toward improving area streets, sidewalks, and drainage throughout the city.

Mayor Sandy Sanders said he believes this tax will help the city continue to move forward and encourage Fort Smith residents to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Polls are open until 7:30.
