FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) — A man suspected of robbing a convenience store now stands accused of setting fire to a police interview room, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Elijah Carter, 27, was inside an interview room for interrogation when an officer smelled and saw smoke, according to a court document. The document states that Carter initially denied lighting the room on fire, but police found a Bic lighter in his pocket. The door sustained permanent damage.

Police arrested Carter last night  after they say he was involved in robbing the Murphy Express on Wedington Drive in Fayetteville on Tuesday (May 12).

He now also faces charges of arson and criminal mischief, police said.

Carter is being held without bond and has a court date on Friday (May 15). according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office website.
