Gentry Girls Win First-Ever Soccer State Championship

The Lady Pioneers defeated Central Arkansas Christian 2-0 Saturday morning at Razorback Field in the 4A Championship.

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)- For the first time in school history the Gentry girls soccer team has won a state title. The Pioneers defeated Central Arkansas Christian 2-0 Saturday morning at Razorback Field in the 4A State Championship.

"We were sisters," Gentry senior Sofiya Stasiv said. "We played as a team and talked. I can't emphasize because we just worked together. It's just team work."

"I am so proud of all my ladies," gentry senior Gahlia Mendoza said. "It's my last year and I'm going to cry because they are all my family. We're like sisters and I love them all."

Sophomore Amber Ellis got the Pioneers on the board in the first half courtesy of a free kick. Ellis was also named the championship game MVP.

"I just wanted to cry," Ellis said. "I'm so honored and lucky to be part of this team. I'm speechless right now."

After junior Haley James extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the second half the Pioneers played sound defense to fend off a late CAC attack.

"It was such an adrenaline rush. Everyone knew they had to play their hardest and give it their all because it was our last game. Everyone talked and pushed through. It's so amazing that we just won."

The title is the second state championship in any sport at Gentry in the last 25 years.
