Mena Wins 4A Softball State Championship

Lady Bearcats bounce back from 2014 title loss as they roll Bauxite

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - The Mena girls softball team won the 4A State Championship after a 7-3 win over Bauxite Friday at Bogle Park .

The Ladycats cleaned up in the 5th inning after Jordan Ward makes her way all the way home on a bad throw to second as she was stealing, followed by a 2-run home run from Macy Brotherton for a 4-run lead.

The game started out neck-and-neck until the 5th inning. Mena's Daryan Torix recorded a solo home run in the 4th for a 3-2 lead. Bauxite would knot it up 3-3 in the 5th on a sacrifice fly from Valery Cotton. The Lady Minors would load the bases in the 7th inning, but Bailey Buffington hits a high foul ball that is right to Mckenzie Spurgin to end the game.

Ward was named game MVP for the Mena Ladycats.

Mena finished runners up in the 2014 4A state finals.

"We were just thinking we knew what it was like last year, and we want to come out on top this year," Ward said. "All of us just came together and said guys this is our year. So we're going to do this."

"About 365 days ago, we were in the other position over there as the runner up," coach Ray Hunter said. "We've been focused all year, we worked hard all year, and these girls put in a lot of good effort to get here and finally feels great to cap this off."
