LEFLORE COUNTY (KFSM) – A voluntary evacuation order was issued for homes and businesses near Wister Lake on Monday (May 25).
Officials say Wister Lake is continuing to rise, and additional flooding is expected for the Wister Lake area and Caston Creek corridor just outside of Wister.
The voluntary evacuation order applies to homes and businesses along U.S. 270 from Pocahontas Road to Lake Wister State Park, according to a news release from LeFlore County Emergency Management.
Water has already started to flow over U.S. 270 near the Caston Creek Bridge, and the area is closed to all traffic. Anyone caught moving a barricade or traveling into the closed area will be fined.
Red Cross is opening a shelter at the Wister High School Safe Room, and local emergency personnel are going door to door to inform residents in the area of the evacuation order, officials said.
If conditions get worse, a mandatory evacuation order could given.
