(CNN) – Joseph “Beau” Biden III, the oldest son of Vice President Joe Biden, has died after a battle with brain cancer.

The Iraq war veteran leaves behind a wife and two children. He had suffered known health problems since 2010, when he had a stroke that did not affect his motor skills or speech.

A White House statement said that Beau “battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life.” President Obama expressed his condolences by saying, “He chased a life of public service, like his dad, serving in Iraq and as Delaware’s attorney general.”

Beau served as Delaware’s attorney general from 2006 to 2014.

He was 46 years old.
