ARLINGTON, Va. (KFSM) – A senior adviser to former U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright died Wednesday (June 3). Lee Williams was 89.

Williams worked for Sens. Mike Mansfield, D-Montana, and Robert Byrd, D-Va., as well as for Fulbright, a Democrat from Arkansas.

Former Fulbright staffer Marsha Scott said Williams died of natural causes at his home in Arlington, Virginia.

“For 25 years, he was one of the most influential men in Washington,” Scott said.

Williams, who graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law, was Fulbright’s chief of staff from 1959 to 1974. From there, he was general counsel to the Senate Democratic Policy Committee until 1978.

In 2006, the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service announced the establishment of the Lee Williams Fellowship in Public Service. The fellowship is awarded every year to a University of Arkansas graduate pursuing a master’s degree at the Clinton School.

He is survived by his wife, Vicky, his son, Floyd, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to the Lee Williams Fellowship in Public Service.
