FORT SMITH (KFSM) - A decorated World War II hero is center-stage for a statue planning to be erected in Downtown Fort Smith. General William Orlando Darby went to Fort Smith High School before graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and as Darby Junior High School's principal described him, "he wasn't a bum. He lit the world on fire."

For a "5NEWS This Morning" segment that aired Saturday (June 6), anchor Daren Bobb spoke to Darby Junior High Principal Dr. Darren McKinney and Little Rock based artist and sculptor Kevin Kresse. They are working on the General Darby Legacy Project, an effort to build a statue of the General on 10th street and Garrison avenue. The project is partly the vision of Kreese, and donations are needed to complete the project.
