FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – A man is behind bars after police say he drowned his friend’s dog because it was possessed and needed to die.

Police said they arrested Alex Webb, 23, of Fayetteville Sunday (June 7) on charges of aggravated animal cruelty.

According to a report, police responded to a residence located at 642 West 15th Street in Fayetteville in reference to a report that a person had drowned a dog.

When officers arrived, the dog’s owner told police Webb told him on Friday (June 5) that his dog named Happy was possessed and had to die, the report states.

The report states that Webb and the dog’s owner went to Flying Possum on the Fayetteville Square in Fayetteville on Saturday (June 6). After noticing that Webb was missing, the man asked the store owner where he had gone. The owner said that Webb had gone out the back door and left his phone in the store, according to the report.

When the dog’s owner came back to his home, he found his dog drenched and not breathing on the bathroom floor, the report states. He left the house and later returned to find his dog missing.

Police saw multiple scratch marks on the bottom of the bathtub in the bathroom, the report states. The dog’s owner said that the tub did not have scratches in it the last time he saw it.

A pair of wet jeans and a t-shirt belonging to Webb were found by police, but Webb denied drowning the dog saying it was from being in a creek, the report states.

Police said they were unable to locate the dog’s body.

Webb was previously charged with animal cruelty in 2011, the report states. He admitted to police he had killed a kitten.

Webb is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $3,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday (June 8).
