From Tee Ball to College World Series: Tyler Spoon’s Story

VAN BUREN (KFSM) -- Tyler Spoon was a three-sport athlete growing up in Van Buren -- playing football, basketball and baseball from seventh through 12th grade, according to his mother, Robbie.

“We always knew baseball was really the true love that he had,” Robbie said.

At five years old, he played his first tee ball game at Huckleberry Field, on the First Baptist Church Angels team.

Fast forward to his junior year of high school, his mom remembers when he got the call about playing baseball for the University of Arkansas -- when he was on a bus, heading to a football game.

“His football coach at the time, thank goodness was also a baseball fan, so he was very generous and kind -- Mike Lee was his name -- and he let Tyler make some calls while they were on their way to play football,” she said.

While it's been an exciting time watching her son's dreams become a reality, Robbie said there's more to Tyler’s life than what’s on the field.

"There definitely is. And I think there definitely has to be. Because if you make that your life and have a bad game or a bad day, it just devastates you -- and Tyler has a very strong faith,” she said. “And we've really seen that grow over the past four years… he knows that God has a plan."

Spoon graduated in May with a degree in Recreation and Sports Management. His mom said he will decide soon if he'll play for the Boston Red Sox.

"If he chooses to go down that path, of course we'll be visiting Boston more than we thought -- definitely a possibility and we'll just see what ends up happening. We're excited for him to see what happens."
